Advanced Driver and Rider Courses

The training consists of tailored tuition during 'on the road observed runs' with one of our volunteer Observers. The runs are held using the Associate's own car or motorcycle.

The IAM RoadSmart (IAMRS) Advanced Courses are recognised by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and conducted by Groups of Advanced Motorists, affiliated to IAMRS, throughout the UK. There are some 180 Groups around the UK and each is a charitable organisation in its own right. This means that training for the Advanced Test is readily available for anyone who wishes to improve his or her driving or riding skills.

Observered sessions

Our qualified Observers will meet you at a convenient time and place, and give you guidance and support on the road, helping you to apply the knowledge and theory you have obtained from the Advanced Driver/Rider Course Logbook. GAM understand that new Associates' skill and experience on the road will vary greatly. Therefore, instruction will be tailored according to your needs and there is no defined number of sessions required to complete the course, rather it will depend on the Associate's progress. At the end of each road session your Observer will give a full debrief and let you know what areas to practice before the next meeting.

Observed runs take place using the Associate's own car or bike which MUST be insured, taxed and have a valid MOT if necessary. The Associate MUST also possess a valid driving licence for the vehicle being driven or ridden. The Associate will be required to sign a Documents Declaration form confirming the above before the start of any practical training.

Costs

The Advanced Driver/Rider Course is purchased from IAMRS. The current cost is £204 for the Advanced Driver Course and £219 for the Advanced Rider Course and includes:-

  • Membership of IAMRS and Gordon Advanced Motorists (GAM) for 1 year as an Associate member.
  • Full membership status is given on completion of the Advanced Test.
  • IAMRS' Advanced Driver/Rider Course Logbook.
  • The Advanced Courses are a real 'skill for life' achievement. Insurance companies recognise this, and some may provide a discount on your motor insurance.
  • Local discounts after becoming a full member of GAM include a 10% discount with Autoparts of Inverurie (excluding parts dept.) and a 5% discount with Tawse Tyres of Inverurie.

As motocycle Observers need to run their own motorcycle during the observered sessions, a fuel contribution of £5 per session is requested to be given directly to your Observer.
